World Rat Day 2025: RSPCA Urges Everyone to Embrace Compassion for Rats
Rats are often misunderstood, but these intelligent, playful creatures are deserving of our compassion. The RSPCA is working to change perceptions on World Rat Day, highlighting that only 68% of adults recognize rats as sentient beings. Alarmingly, one-third of people don’t realize that rats experience positive and negative emotions.
Ellie Muscat, an RSPCA policy officer, emphasizes the need for increased awareness: “These remarkable animals deserve our respect.” Beyond their reputation, pet rats form strong bonds with humans and fellow rats. They’re quick learners and even capable of counting!
Rats show empathy by helping their trapped peers and sharing food, putting the needs of others before their own wellbeing. They enjoy affection, often cuddling up with their owners, and will remember those who have played with them.
Unfortunately, misconceptions have led to neglect; between 2021 and 2024, 261 abandoned rats were taken in by RSPCA centers. They currently seek loving homes for friendly rats like Tawny and his companions, who love to explore and play.
Prospective owners should be aware that rats thrive in social environments, requiring companions and enriching spaces filled with toys and hideaways. As we celebrate World Rat Day, it’s time to dispel myths and recognize the wonderful qualities of these often-misjudged animals.
