US Bans China’s DeepSeek on Government Devices Amid Rising Security Concerns

In a move to safeguard sensitive information, the U.S. Commerce Department has prohibited the use of the Chinese AI model DeepSeek on government devices. This restriction aims to protect data privacy amid ongoing concerns regarding the potential risks posed by DeepSeek to national security. Lawmakers, including Reps. Josh Gottheimer and Darin LaHood, have voiced fears that using this AI could inadvertently share proprietary information with the Chinese Communist Party. Several states, such as Virginia, Texas, and New York, have already instituted similar bans, reflecting a growing push to limit the model’s influence. As these regulations evolve, the extent of the ban across the U.S. government remains unclear, but the urgency is evident as equity markets react to DeepSeek’s low-cost AI offerings.
