Uncertain Future for Iconic Tortilla Restaurant in Oxford: What’s Next?

Tortilla, located on Cornmarket Street since 2019 and a favorite among diners, faces uncertainty as the Clarendon Centre undergoes redevelopment. With immediate neighbors like Barclays and HMV announcing relocations—HMV shutting down on April 22 and Barclays moving across the street—employees at Tortilla are eagerly awaiting updates regarding their future.

Founded in 2007, Tortilla has become the largest fast-casual Mexican restaurant chain in the UK, known for its California-style menu that mirrors the taquerias of San Francisco. The restaurant first drew crowds in Oxford, with fans waiting an hour for a complimentary burrito on opening day. Managers such as Slavo Balaz, who was inspired by his travels, emphasize the appealing concept and quality of their offerings.

As redevelopment plans for the Clarendon Centre aim to transform the area into a modern retail and office hub with a new public space, Tortilla’s place within this evolving environment remains uncertain. The council approved these plans in April 2022, and while construction progresses, the future of Tortilla and the shopping complex is still being determined. The chain has yet to provide a statement on how this transition might impact its operations.
