UK Police Seize Submarine Smuggling £530M Cocaine: 6.5 Tons Uncovered in Major Bust
In a monumental drug bust, Portuguese police, in collaboration with the British Crime Agency, intercepted a semi-submersible submarine carrying 6.5 tons of cocaine valued at £530 million. Captured about 500 miles south of the Azores, this operation marks a significant step in combating transcontinental drug trafficking that increasingly relies on such elusive vessels.
Five individuals—a mix of Brazilian, Colombian, and Spanish nationals—were apprehended aboard the submersible. Authorities revealed that this represents the first interception of a narco-submarine in open waters, highlighting the evolving tactics of drug cartels. Luis Neves, a Portuguese police chief, emphasized this operation’s impact on a formidable criminal organization, underscoring the increasing use of semi-submersibles, which offer better concealment during long voyages.
These vessels pose considerable challenges for law enforcement; their ability to sink if cornered complicates evidence collection. With operations becoming more frequent, the international community is ramping up efforts to tackle this sophisticated transportation method. As authorities reflect on past successes, including a 2019 interception off Spain, the recent bust underscores the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and its global implications.
