Tragic Cable Car Crash Near Naples: Two British Tourists Among Four Dead

A tragic cable car accident in southern Italy has claimed the lives of four individuals, including two British tourists. The incident occurred at Monte Faito, approximately 45 kilometers southeast of Naples, when the cable supporting the car snapped, causing it to plunge from a steep drop. Eyewitness reports indicate that at the time of the accident, the cable car was in distress with two cabins suspended mid-air.

Among the injured is another Israeli tourist who has been airlifted to Ospedale del Mare in Naples, suffering from multiple bone fractures. Rescue teams are on-site, battling challenging weather conditions with strong winds and thick fog, to locate and assist any remaining victims.

Local authorities, including Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), have expressed their condolences and are monitoring the situation closely. The Ente Autonomo Volturno, operator of the cable car system, initially reported that passengers were “descending safely,” only to confirm later that one cabin had fallen, leaving the chairman describing the incident as a “tragedy.”

As investigations commence, including one by the Torre Annunziata public prosecutor’s office, officials emphasize the need to understand how such an incident could occur, especially so soon after the cable car’s seasonal reopening. The mayor of Naples has also weighed in, extending heartfelt sympathies to the victims’ families during this devastating time.
