Shocking Attack Outside Tube: Man Kills 87-Year-Old Pensioner in Brutal Assault

In a harrowing incident early on February 27 last year, Sekai Miles, 23, brutally attacked 87-year-old Bernard Fowler outside Harold Wood station in east London. The attack, described by prosecutors as ‘shocking and appalling,’ involved Miles gouging Fowler’s eye before mercilessly beating him with his own walking stick 19 times and stamping on his head eight times. Witnesses reported the extreme violence, which left Fowler helpless on the ground.

CCTV footage revealed the attack began shortly after Fowler arrived at the station to collect free newspapers for the community. Miles, who traveled from Liverpool Street and had displayed aggressive behavior earlier, fled the scene holding the bloody stick and was arrested after a struggle with police.

The court was informed of Miles’ mental health struggles, including paranoid schizophrenia and prior use of the synthetic drug spice, exacerbated by a lack of medical treatment. During the proceedings, expert insights highlighted missed opportunities for intervention in Miles’ care. He ultimately pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility, resulting in a sentence that mandates ongoing treatment in a secure psychiatric facility, potentially for years.

Fowler’s family mourned the loss of a cherished figure, described as kind and caring, emphasizing the devastating impact of such senseless violence.
