Severe Storms Strike South and Midwest: Tornadoes Reported in Multiple States
On Wednesday, multiple tornadoes wreaked havoc across the South and Midwest, as a powerful storm system gripped the region. Tornado watches and warnings were issued from Arkansas to Illinois, impacting a large swath of states. Authorities reported extensive damage—trees uprooted, power disrupted, homes and businesses affected.
By late Wednesday, over 200,000 customers were without power, with Indiana bearing the brunt of the impact. Nineteen tornadoes had been reported since morning, with Missouri alone accounting for nine sightings. Damage was particularly severe in Nevada, Missouri, where city manager Gary Edwards confirmed injuries and extensive destruction.
In Arkansas, tornado visuals were confirmed in Almyra, while a tornado narrowly missed the National Weather Service office in Paducah, Kentucky, knocking out their main power.
This storm system originated on the West Coast earlier in the week and is set to stall, raising alarms of potential flooding. Forecasters predict 10 to 15 inches of rain could fall in some areas, prompting officials in affected states to issue flood alerts. With hazardous conditions expected to persist, residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
