Severe Storm Hits: Freezing Rain Warnings Extended, Thousands Without Power
A major winter storm has struck eastern Ontario, particularly impacting Kingston, where power outages affect hundreds and police report multiple collisions. Environment Canada warns of widespread outages and treacherous travel due to freezing rain, affecting areas from Bancroft to Belleville and extending warnings through Sunday.
On Saturday morning, freezing rain warnings were active along Lake Ontario for Kingston, Belleville, and Quinte West, with expected ice accretion between 5 to 25 millimeters or more. Ottawa and surrounding towns, once under special weather statements, are now included in freezing rain advisories, predicting similar accumulations.
The freezing rain may temporarily ease but is likely to persist in some areas into Sunday afternoon. Kingston has declared a significant weather event, implementing plans for snow transit and overnight parking bans. Over 1,800 customers are already experiencing outages, particularly in Kingston and Leeds.
Safety officials recommend postponing non-essential travel due to hazardous road conditions. The Ontario Provincial Police reported about 94 collisions from midnight to noon Saturday, with one fatal accident among several resulting only in minor injuries.
As ice builds up, potentially causing tree branch breakage, authorities stress the importance of being prepared for power outages and hazardous conditions on the roads. Stay safe and informed as the storm progresses.
