Roundabouts: The Leading Spot for Dangerous ‘Near Misses’ on Our Roads
Drivers in Britain face the highest odds of narrowly escaping collisions at roundabouts, a study revealed. In 2024, a fifth of 2,810 near-miss incidents reported to AA Accident Assist occurred at these junctions, with many drivers nearly colliding with vehicles ahead. Car parks and traditional junctions followed as common near-miss locations. Alarmingly, 25% of surveyed motorists experienced at least one close call last year.
Younger drivers aged 18-24 reported the highest near-miss rates (37%). According to Tim Rankin from AA, distractions often contribute to these close calls. With evolving road designs like Dutch roundabouts, maintaining focus has never been more essential for ensuring driver safety.
