Olivier Awards 2025: ‘Giant’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ Take Home Top Honors!
“Giant,” a thought-provoking play depicting Roald Dahl’s antisemitism, has emerged as a standout at the Olivier Awards, garnering three prestigious accolades. This production, which features John Lithgow as the complex children’s author, claimed best actor, best supporting actor for Elliot Levey, and the coveted best new play award. Set to transfer to the West End on April 26, the play originally staged at the Royal Court has received critical acclaim. Clive Davis praised it in The Times of London for its “subtle, intelligent and stylishly crafted” approach, advocating for its expansion to a larger venue.
Other notable productions also received recognition. The beloved musical “Fiddler on the Roof,” which is transferring to London’s Barbican in May, won best musical revival, while “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” a folk-rock interpretation of the acclaimed F. Scott Fitzgerald story, took home the best new musical award along with two other honors.
Among the evening’s highlights were Eline Arbo, awarded best director for “The Years,” a striking narrative that has prompted intense audience reactions, particularly during its gripping abortion scene. Imelda Staunton captured best actress in a musical for her role in “Hello, Dolly!”, and Lesley Manville won best actress in a play for her performance in “Oedipus.” The awards illuminated the vibrant and diverse landscape of London theater, showcasing powerful storytelling across multiple genres.
