NASA Unveils Stunning Image of Shock Waves from Next-Gen Supersonic Plane Over the Sun

NASA and Boom Supersonic recently released a stunning image of the XB-1 aircraft generating a shockwave during its successful test flight on February 10. This historic flight marked the first American-made civil supersonic jet to break the sound barrier not just once, but three times. CEO Blake Scholl emphasized the significance of the photo, as it reveals the previously invisible shockwaves around the aircraft. Utilizing Schlieren photography, developed in 1864, NASA captured this iconic moment with perfect timing over the Mojave Desert. Importantly, the flight produced no audible sonic boom, paving the way for future supersonic commercial flights. Boom Supersonic is now transitioning to build its airliner, Overture, aimed at reducing travel times across the U.S. with orders already from major airlines.
