Ministers Set to Reveal £5bn Cuts to Benefits Today Amid Labour’s Outcry Over Plans

Ministers anticipate a fierce Labour backlash as they unveil significant benefits cuts amid growing fears over rising costs. Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall aims to save around £5 billion by tightening eligibility for disability benefits and increasing job-seeking obligations, particularly for those experiencing mental health challenges. Critics, including Keir Starmer, label these proposals as “shameful,” with many opposing changes to Personal Independence Payments (PIP). The Cabinet will approve the welfare package before Ms. Kendall addresses the Commons. The government asserts the reforms are vital, citing a rise in claimants from 2.8 million to about 4 million since 2019. As the benefits bill grows, spending cuts emerge as the only viable pathway given the £15 billion financial gap.
