LA County Unveils $4 Billion Plan to Settle Disturbing Sex Abuse Claims

Los Angeles County has reached a groundbreaking settlement of $4 billion, addressing sexual abuse claims stemming from its juvenile detention and foster care systems. Lawyers indicate this historic payout marks the largest of its kind in U.S. history. The agreement, resulting from a 2019 California law that broadened the scope for child sexual abuse lawsuits, covers over 6,800 claims dating back to 1959.

Many allegations relate to abuse in the 1980s to 2000s at facilities like the MacLaren Children’s Center. Opened in 1961 and closed in 2003, MacLaren has faced severe accusations of mistreatment, including reports of staff misconduct against children as young as five.

County officials, acknowledging the deep-rooted impacts of these abuses, stated their commitment to systemic reform to enhance safety for vulnerable youth. This massive settlement surpasses previous significant payouts, including $2.4 billion to settle Boy Scouts of America lawsuits and $1.1 billion from USC regarding patient abuse cases.
