EC President von der Leyen Unveils Bold Climate Initiatives to Lead Europe Forward

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announces the EU’s readiness to take countermeasures against U.S. tariffs if negotiations falter. Following President Donald Trump’s imposition of 20% tariffs, von der Leyen labeled this move a “major blow” to the global economy, warning that it could lead to increased protectionism and serious repercussions for millions worldwide, especially vulnerable countries.

She acknowledged that while some nations exploit global trade rules, relying solely on tariffs will not resolve the underlying issues. The EU has vowed to implement counter-tariffs on €26 billion ($28 billion) worth of U.S. goods, following previous retaliatory duties aimed at safeguarding European workers and consumers.

Expected in mid-April, these tariffs will affect a wide array of products, including industrial-grade steel and aluminum, machinery parts, bourbon, agricultural goods, leather items, and home appliances.
