Beware the Speed Camera Myth: Drivers Risk Fines by Ignoring Key Facts
Many drivers believe in the “10 percent +2 rule” regarding speed limits, thinking they can exceed the limit without repercussions. However, this is a misconception. The enforcement of speed limits varies by area, meaning costly fines and penalties await those who break the law.
Andrew Jervis, CEO of Click Mechanic, emphasizes that speeding is dangerous and should never be viewed lightly. He points out that speed limits are not arbitrary; they are based on road design, traffic flow, and pedestrian safety. “The 10 percent rule is a guideline for police officers, not for drivers,” Jervis states. Ignoring speed limits can lead to severe consequences, including fines and accidents.
Interestingly, speed cameras don’t have to be visible all the time. Officers can operate out of sight, and while it’s not illegal to flash headlights to warn other drivers, it may lead to legal complications.
If caught speeding, the penalties vary based on how much over the limit you are. The minimum fine on UK roads is £100, but those who exceed the limit by less than 10 percent may be offered a speed awareness course as an alternative to penalties. Awareness and education remain critical in promoting road safety for all users.
