Arson Attack on Gov. Josh Shapiro’s Pennsylvania Home: Key Details and Reactions

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and his family experienced a frightening incident early Sunday when an arson attack forced them to evacuate their official residence. The attack occurred around 2 a.m. when a man, identified as 38-year-old Cody Balmer, allegedly broke into the Harrisburg mansion and threw homemade incendiary devices, igniting fires in two rooms. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Balmer faces numerous charges, including attempted murder and terrorism, and is noted to have a troubled past, including a history of mental illness. Authorities indicated that Balmer, after confessing to his former partner, later turned himself in at state police headquarters. During his actions, significant damage was inflicted, especially in the state dining room, which had just hosted Passover celebrations with local community members.

Surveillance footage captured Balmer breaching security by breaking a window and setting fires before fleeing. It’s been reported that he harbored resentment towards Governor Shapiro but did not elaborate on his motives. Figures released indicate substantial damage to the residence, built in 1968 and spanning 29,000 square feet.

As the investigation continues, the FBI is involved, ensuring a thorough examination of this alarming incident. Governor Shapiro remarked on the troubling political climate that may underpin such attacks.
